Here are the steps you will need to take in order to install Thunderbird and the needed add-ons, backup your emails in Zimbra, and upload your backup file into Thunderbird. It's a great desktop email program that provides a lot of functionality, but for the purpose of this article we’re going to focus on its ability to create offline folders on your computer to store your backed up Zimbra emails. We use Thunderbird in these instructions because it’s a free email program created by Mozilla (the creators of the Firefox browser) that we trust. Any subsequent times, it will take much less time because you will have all of the add-ons already installed and ready to be used. The first time you or your office tech follow these steps, it may take you 45 minutes to an hour to complete the process. This way you can still have access to all of your emails without having them fill up your Zimbra storage.
